Non-Prescription Medication (over the counter medicines)
The South Carolina Boards of Medical Examiners, Nursing and Pharmacy approved and adopted the recommendation that school nurses may administer over the counter medications with parental consent and without physician consent. Therefore, if your child requires over the counter medication at school, please either click the link below, visit the school webpage, or contact the school nurse to request a copy of the appropriate form. This form must be completed before the school nurse will be able to administer any over the counter medication. Please be reminded that all over the counter medication must be in its original container and be labeled with the child’s name. Keep in mind that Aspirin or medications containing Aspirin will not be given without a physician's order. Please also be aware that the school nurse will not administer a dose of medication that exceeds the recommended instructions according to the weight/age instructions on the label without a physician's order.

The school nurse does not keep "extra" medication on file in the health room to administer to students, as only medication provided for a specific student can be administered to that student.

Prescription Medications
Every possible effort should be made for students to take prescription medications at home. However, there are circumstances in which a medication needs to be taken during the school day. In order for the school nurse to administer a prescription medication to a student, the appropriate form (see link below) MUST be completed by the student's parents AND physician. Please note, it is the student's responsibility to come to the health room at the time the medication is to be taken to obtain medication. If a physician discontinues a medication and/or changes a student's medication, the school nurse must be notified and a new form completed by both parties (parents and physician).

*Students are not allowed to carry medications on themselves and/or self-administer medications at school. Disciplinary actions can/will be taken for students who are in violation of this school district policy.
