Students 3rd grade and under require an authorized adult or older sibling to be visible to the bus driver when dropping students off at the bus stop. If there is no one visible to the driver to receive the student, the student will be taken back to the school. Bus privileges may be suspended for students that have to be returned more than 3 times.

A special permission note from parent/guardian is required for any special permissions to provide alternate transportation arrangements. The parent is required to send a note to the school and it has to be signed by school administration and given to the bus driver. If a note is not sent, the child will be delivered to their designated bus stop. Due to most buses being at maximum capacity, we will only be able to accommodate special permission request if the bus has seats available.

Special Permissions Include:

Students riding home with another student (limited due to capacity)
Students riding a different bus (limited due to capacity)
Students boarding/off boarding bus at another stop location

Transportation is provided for students to and from the assigned bus stop based on the residential address. Request for an alternate bus stop must be submitted to the school then approved by the Transportation Office.

School buses can carry between 54 and 78 passengers. School buses are made for the safe transportation of students and every effort must be taken to keep school buses the safest form of transportation on the road.

Bus stop times are estimates based on a normal day with all bus stops. Times will fluctuate due to circumstances beyond our control. Please allow a 10-minute window before and after the estimated bus stop times; therefore, students should be at the bus stop location 10-minutes prior to the normal stop time. Buses are NOT allowed to blow the horn or wait for students.

South Carolina has laws that govern where school bus stops may be made. A few of these are listed for you below. (Taken from the “SC School Bus Driver Training Handbook”)

School bus stops must be at least two-tenths of a mile or more apart. Bus stops should be made where there is
unobstructed view for at least 600 in either direction.
According to South Carolina law, students living within one and a half miles of the school they attend are not eligible
for school bus transportation, except under certain conditions made known to the driver by a school official.
Your district will route buses in the safest, most direct way over publicly or privately maintained highways and streets,
to provide service within three-tenths of a mile of each child who qualifies for transportation service.

SC Department of Education Memo: Carry-on Items, Band Instruments -Dated 02/18/2021

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) maintains the following position regarding transporting band instruments and other carry-on items on school buses:

The primary purpose of the school bus is to provide safe transportation for students to and from school and school related activities. The safety of students and other passengers is paramount when transporting band instruments and other large items. Any item carried on a school bus must be of such size that it can be transported in the student’s lap. Any home project, musical instrument, or other item which would create a hazard or block the aisle or vision of the driver is prohibited. This is necessary to ensure that all items are kept under the control of the student at all times in case of an accident or an emergency, and that those items do not prevent or hinder the evacuation of the bus in the event of an emergency.

The United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Standard 17, Pupil Transportation Safety, reads in part:

...baggage and other items transported in the passenger compartment should be stored so that the aisles are kept clear and the doors and emergency exits of school vehicles remain unobstructed at all times.

Compliance with this standard is mandatory. Carry-on items cannot be placed at any door or emergency exit, and these items must be properly secured to prevent them from becoming flying objects in the event of an accident. Loose items on the seats or floor, or anything which obstructs the aisle, endanger all passengers on the bus.

No large science projects, boxes, live animals, etc. are allowed to be carried on the school bus. Parents must make other arrangements for these types of projects. All carry-on items must be able to be held in the child’s lap.
